Question: Washington had Robert Meachem on their roster, cut him and then picked him up back off waivers.

We should still be able to keep him on our roster for 2010, under his original contract correct? I didn't see anything in the rules that would be state otherwise.

IV. D. 10.
Free agents acquired through the waivers process are deemed to have 1-year, zero dollar contracts for cap and contract-limits purposes. Free agents acquired through the waivers process may be RFA’d using the process defined in section IV.B.5 to determine the applicable salary level.

We had decided I think it was 2-3 years ago because of confusion over this exact issue that as soon as a player is dropped, his contract becomes dead and the team that dropped him pays his buyout if one applies. At that point he is a UFA and can be picked up by any team (including the original contract holder) with a one year, $0 salary contract and his value for RFA is determined by the players on each side of him in the points total.

We did this as a strategic move in 2008 with Osi Umenyiora. When he was out for the year we had dropped him, cancelling the deal he had that was over $2M somewhere. We then picked him back up and his RFA "price" was only $800K, allowing us to tag him at $1.8M.

Meachem could be RFA'd but unfortunately fell between TJ Houshmandzadeh and Terrell Owens, making his "price" approximately $12.9M (with the tag on top of that). Just a hunch but I'm guessing he's going into the UFA pool this year...
